I'm not officially back yet (and I probably won't be until the new year), but I figured I owed it to you guys to at least post some new icons. I guess I can't really call them "new", since they've been sitting on my computer for like 5 months... but you know... new to you. ;-)
I'm going to be posting the rest of my Scarlett Johansson movie icons. I decided to get rid of the song set idea, so it's just blanks (I've removed the version with lyrics from the older post of Girl With A Pearl Earring and A Love Song For Bobby Long icons because I didn't think anyone really liked them). They're not bad icons... just a little plain for my standards (because they were all made the same way). :-P
Anyway... today I'm posting 15 icons of Scarlett Johansson in Ghost World and 10 from In Good Company. I also still have Lost In Translation, The Perfect Score, and possibly The Island and An American Rhapsody to post at a later date. But, at the rate things are going, who knows how long that will be? Lol.

Last new icons for a while

Well, here they are-- the last of the Thirteen icons. These will be the last new icons I post for a while. Maybe a month or two. I'm very busy with other things at the moment, so I'm not sure when I'll have time to work on icons. But rest assured that when I do come back, there will be plenty of new stuff to see. :-)
Anyway, last set... same warning applies on the self-injury pictures. If you don't know what I'm talking about, click here to read it.
And if you recognize 146 it's because I've been using it on my personal journal for about a month now, lol.

Got a few things to cover, so I'm making a special post for this.

1.) Comments
I have just finally caught up on all the comments people have left in the past month. I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to reply! I usually am on top of things, but I have been very busy lately, and haven't had the time. Again, I apologize.

2.) Resources
It has come to my attention that Thefilebin no longer works. As a result, all of the brush and gradient posts are currently down. For the moment, this is fine, but I will need to find alternative hosting in the future, as I still have completed brush and gradient sets to be posted. I don't really want to get a DeviantArt account, so that's kind of up in the air at the moment.
If anyone has any suggestions for free file hosting, please let me know. I can't use any place like yousendit because the page times out before I can finish uploading anything (because I'm on dial-up), so I need something that will allow me to store the file online permanently.
If I ever get my domain, this problem will be solved, but I don't know if that's ever going to happen at this point...

3.) New icons
As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, I have been very busy and haven't had much time to spend on graphics or icons (I'm actually trying to spend less time at the computer). I have several sets of icons that are completed but without text. I also have additional sets which have been capped, and cropped, but not completed. I just haven't had the time to sit down and finish anything. I do still have the last portion of the Thirteen icons, and I will get those uploaded within a couple days for you guys, I promise.
But beyond that... I don't have anything else ready to post. So it could be a while until any more new icons are posted again. Also, I am running low on image hosting space, so I may be deleting old icons again soon.

4. Blank icons
Just a little friendly reminder... if the icon is blank, then YES, you may customize it. :-) I do not have a problem with that at all; that's what they're for. The only thing I mind is if you take the icons and claim them as your own, because that's stealing. But if you don't like the text I've used and want to add your own, go right ahead.

Trying something new

OK, so I sorta lied. Lol.
I was going to post the rest of the Thirteen icons next, but I'm gonna wait on those, because this is something new I'm trying.
Scarlett Johansson is offically my favorite actress now. :-P So, I'm making icons from her movies. This post has 10 icons from Girl With A Pearl Earring and 20 from A Love Song For Bobby Long. In the future, I will be posting Scarlett icons from Lost In Translation, Ghost World, The Perfect Score and In Good Company.
So all of these icons are made the same way. Only difference is a color layer. ~~The text is done the same way.~~ This is not something I'd normally do, but like I said, I'm trying new stuff.
~~These are also song sets. The set of icons from each movie will feature lyrics from a different song. Yeah, because I'm so cool and creative like that. :-P Lol.~~
Like most of my other sets, I have included the blanks in case people want to add their own text (or if they just like them blank). Enjoy!

More Virgin Suicides bases

The rest of the VS bases.
From this point on, I won't be posting as much. I will still try to post once every week or two, but I really need to just take a step back from this whole icon thing. I'm going to try and spend more of my time focused on other creative projects for a while.
Anyway, on with the icons.
I got most of the pictures from random picture searches and various websites. Numbers 265--275 were scanned (by me) from the 70s soundtrack, and 301-308 were scanned from the insert in the DVD.
As usual, yes, they're blank so you can customize them for yourself. Go nuts. Just don't repost them somewhere with text and claim them as your own work because that would be stealing.

Another Butterfly Effect brush set. People seem to like these screencap brushes, so I'll continue posting them. :-)
These were made from various lighting effects within the film. I worked some shadowy ones in there, too. As usual, they're for PSP 7, and you may be able to use them in some versions of photoshop if you change the file extension to .abr. If not, there is the image pack for all other programs.

I've now removed some of the older icons (as discussed in an earlier post). Probably for good, but if I ever get my domain I may consider putting them back up. Right now I am just really lacking the space to host these mofos! O_O
Anyway, kinda wanted to keep with the mother's day theme (even though it's after midnight now), so here's some more icons from the movie Thirteen. Yeah, I guess that sorta applies. :-P
They're all pretty similar to the last set I posted since they were made at the same time. Let's see... they're mainly movie quotes and I used light textures on a bunch of them (though I'm still not quite sure whether or not I really like the effect). There's quite a few animated and multiple image ones; since I've been experimenting with new styles and stuff.
There's also a bit of a disclaimer I feel I need to make. I see lots of arguments come up when icons displaying self-injury are posted; even if the pictures in question are from a movie (making it the work of make-up artists, not a blade). However, since I know this can be a problem, I am issuing a warning that, yes, several of the icons in this set include images from Tracy's cutting scenes. I'd also like to point out that these images have been cropped, colored, and resized in a manner meant to minimalize the 'gore' or what have you so that it gets the message across without offending anyone (I hope). Said images are not meant to glorify or condone self-injury in any way; they are a part of the film, and so I have used them in this set of icons.
With that said, there are 40 icons in this post. All the disclaimer ugliness aside, I hope you'll like them! :-)

1 brush set; survey summary

The survey has been up for a while now, and I've come to some conclusions. The most popular choices for next icon set seem to be Saved! and Garden State. So I suppose these will be coming next; but not until after Requiem For A Dream. You see, I already started on these, so they'll have to come first. Plus, I still have like 3 or 4 sets already in progress right now, lol.
Anyway, after that would probably come Memento and Mean Girls (since they were next). I also had someone suggest chapter title sets for The Notebook and Lolita, so I'll squeeze those in between somewhere. And I think I may do soundtrack song titles for Garden State and Wicker Park because I happen to have both of these soundtracks and like the songs. :-P
Alright-- brushes. Since there has been a slight rule change in 100x100_brushes; I have decided to now only post one brush set at a time. The new rule only allows one preview image posted outside of a cut, and even though technically it would be allowed to post more than one brush set at a time, I think it's easier this way because I post a link to here anyway (meaning it wouldn't really make sense for me to use an lj cut in a preview post that links to here). Just makes more sense that way.
This brush set was made from little clips of the super-saturated sequences that occur after Evan changes something in the movie and his old memories are replaced with new ones. I don't know how to explain it any better than that, lol. If you've seen the film, you should know what I mean.

Today I'm posting 55 icons from The Royal Tenenbaums (even though no one really seemed all that excited about these according to the survey, lol). Or anyway, I hope somebody likes them. ;-)
The screencaps were made by hinshack. Warning for language and some blood. I tried to minimize the blood as best I could by changing the coloring and cropping to exclude as much as possible (from Richie's attempted suicide sequence).
There should be one more set after these. Oh, and I started on a set of Richie's drawings and production pictures; so look for those in the future.

Gradient update

2 more sets of gradients. As before, these are zip files of 25 gradients for PSP 7. The file extensions are .jgd, and if you change them to .pspgradient they should work in PSP 8 & 9. If you change them to .grd, they should work in most versions of photoshop.
I'm having some trouble with the file bin again, so I hope these work. If not, I'll try to fix them later when the system isn't being quite so picky. O_o

In need of feedback

My reasons for posting today are two-fold (I always wanted to say that, lol). First of all, it looks as though I'm going to have to take down some of the older icons. Most likely the ones from A Walk To Remember, Stand By Me, Dream A Little Dream and Dark Angel. The reposts. These icons are pretty old, and I don't think many people are using them anymore... so probably the best thing to do is take them down. They're just eating up space at the moment.
Secondly, I made a (fairly short) survey. 80 people have now added this journal to their friends list (yay!), so I figure I should ask some questions and find out what it is that people are most interested in. That way, I know what to do to keep people interested. ;-)
I don't have the option to create a poll, so you can just comment with your answers. You can answer as many or as few of the questions as you like... I just wanted a little feedback. :-) Thank you, everyone!

Some more Virgin Suicides icons from movie stills, promo pics, production pics, and other related random images. Most of the images were obtained from picture searches on google and yahoo.
I did use some of the same pictures as the last time, but I tried cropping differently and stuff. They're all blank because I'm not good with text on stills. I have more that I'll post later. There were quite a few this time, so I split them up.

New brushes!
These were made from screencaps of The Butterfly Effect. I tried a few new things this time. Anyway, here are the first 2 sets I'm posting. One is various textured images, and the other is a set of borders made from the textures. I don't think they're quite as good as the others I've posted, but hopefully someone will find them useful.
Thefilebin is still acting a little weird, so I hope these will work.

Exclusion layer tips

I don't know if I should call this a tutorial or not, because I don't explain how to make a specific icon. Instead, I more or less explain a technique that can be used in icons (or any graphics, really). Anyway, it's about exclusion layers.
I use PSP 7, but I try to explain everything in general terms, so I think you could probably do these same things on Photoshop or GIMP as well. However, you will need to have some knowledge on using the layer palette , flood-fill tool and things like that. Otherwise, this whole thing is just gonna be insanely confusing, lol.
Also, I have included pictures, so hopefully that will help illustrate the points I make.

Contrary to popular belief, you can actually use exclusion layers in pretty much all colors (not just navy blue). Different colors will yield different results. There are plenty of examples and different variations below.

These first 4 were done in a pretty simple style that works for most colors set to exclusion (dark colors work best). You start with your base and greyscale it. There are several ways of doing this. One is to remove the saturation. Another is to greyscale it (this is a sort of complicated process to explain because you also need to raise the colors back to 16 million after doing this). You could also make a new (blank) layer of white, black, or a shade of grey and set it to color on the blend mode (then merge all layers). There are plenty of ways to make a picture black and white; just use whichever works easiest for you.
Next step is to duplicate the layer twice. Set the top layer to soft light. Set the middle layer to exclusion. Now, using the flood fill tool (set to normal), pick any color you'd like to use and fill the middle layer. You can then adjust the opacity until you get it to look how you'd like it to. Sometimes it looks better if you reduce the opacity on the middle (exclusion) layer. See the examples below:

You can use this same process on color pictures, but it's not quite the same. These usually look best if the opacity of the top (soft light) layer is reduced. You really just have to try things out to get it to look how you want, though.

The same process can be used with gradients. Gradients are a little more difficult to work because of the variety of colors and how they react on an exclusion layer. Because of this, it will usually work better on a greyscaled picture. But you can try it with color pictures (they don't come out very exclusionary, though). Here's a couple examples of each:

This is a different style for exclusion layers. You'll probably notice that darker colors work best for exclusion layers. This style is good for adding some hints of color on any color chosen for exclusion.
It's a little bit more difficult to explain. For this one, you duplicate the background of your base, and fill the layer with any color set to exclusion on the tool options menu. Then set this layer to overlay. It may be a bit more easier to understand from the examples shown below:

This does work well on color images, but you can try it on greyscaled images, too. I personally like how they both turn out in this style. On greyscaled images, you may need to duplicate your layer a couple times to get a better effect. The result is similar to the first style described, but not the same.

Using this same process (flood-filling the layer on exclusion), you can try out different blend modes for the layer. Here are some examples that were set to hard light instead of overlay:

And you can use gradients for this style. They're a little harder to work sometimes, though. I couldn't remember exactly what colors were used in the gradients on these last 3, so you'll have to test it out a little if you want to do this.

Alrighty, that being said, I hope you've learned a little something about exclusion layers. :-) I wouldn't use this as the only step for coloring an icon; just one of many. In other words, if I were making icons from any of the examples shown above, I'd add many more layers of color, textures, brushes... things of that nature. This is just a little tip for people who like to use exclusion or wanted to learn a little bit more about it.
Also, another little tip; try flood-filling on different blend modes. I do this for most of the icons I make.

It's happening so fast

I was going to post a couple new sets of brushes tonight, but for some reason thefilebin is acting up and not really letting me upload things properly. So instead of that, I'm gonna post some new icons (which is a little backwards, given that these icons use some of the new brushes, lol). :-)
Anyway, I've got 51 icons from the movie Thirteen to share. A long time ago when I asked which movies people were most interested in seeing icons from, I was told Donnie Darko and Thirteen. Well, it may have taken me like 6 months, but I'm finally doing it! Lol.
These should be in order of appearance in the movie. I've got like 100 something more of these that I'll be finishing and posting over time. I'm curious to see how people will respond to this first set, though. I tried using some of those nifty little light textures, and I wasn't really that pleased with how most of them turned out. But I guess if people like them, I can continue doing that. Anyway, let's see how this goes. You can help me out by letting me know which ones you think look the best. ;-)

I finally got off my ass (or rather, since this requires sitting at the computer for long hours, ON my ass) and started working on the text for new icons. I wouldn't say I'm particularly proud with the way these turned out, but I think they're decent.
I'm finding new ways to make small text easier to read. However, I realize that it may still be difficult on some (and I don't believe in putting text on an icon if you can't even read it!). If you have trouble reading any of them, you can always ask. :-P
So, today I'll be posting 60 (yes, the bold WAS necessary, lol) new icons from The Royal Tenenbaums. The screencaps for these were mostly made by hinshack; but I made some of them myself. Most of the text on the icons are quotes from the movie. I wasn't feeling very creative last night, lol. There's also a few with lyrics on them.
Since I've posted some Royal Tenenbaums icons before, I'll start the counting from where I left off on those. And um... yeah... I'm sure you'll notice they're not really in any kind of order, lol.
For the record, I think these are better than the others I posted. :-P I think I'm getting better with putting multiple images in icons.

Since there was so much positive response on the last sets of gradients I posted, I decided to go ahead and post some more now. :-) Nice to see people are enjoying these even though the colors are so random and weird, lol.
I made 300 gradients total, so I'm sure a few of them are going to be similar. But hey... maybe no one will notice. :-P
